This week, NLGJA—The Association of LGBTQ Journalists—announced the recipients of its Excellence in Journalism Awards and named Katie Barnes as its Journalist of the Year.
The Excellence in Journalism Awards were first launched in 1993—the same year as the very first MBLGTACC at Iowa State University—”to foster, recognize and reward excellence in journalism on issues related to the LGBTQ community,” the association noted in its press release.
“Katie’s commitment to authenticity and uplifting oft-overlooked perspectives and voices helps advance conversations and carry the movement forward," said Justin Drwencke, the Institute's chief executive officer. "We are proud of the work Katie has done to advocate for the advancement of the LGBTQ community, both through the Institute and their work at espnW.”
Barnes, the Institute’s chief development officer, is a writer for espnW (formerly at Outsports), where they cover sports and culture. They will be recognized with this award at NLGJA’s September national convention in Philadelphia.
