LANSING, MI—Columbus, Ohio is the next destination for America's largest and oldest continuously-held conference for queer and trans+ college students. The 30th annual Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference (MBLGTACC) will be held October 21-23, 2022 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
“We’re excited to celebrate this milestone, which comes at a consequential time in our collective history,” said Justin Drwencke, executive director of the Midwest Institute for Sexuality and Gender Diversity. “For nearly two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has layered its own challenges, hardships, and loss over systems of racism, state violence, and worker exploitation. I look forward to the rich and timely sessions and conversations we’ve come to expect from presenters and attendees, and we’re thrilled to safely welcome folks from all over the country to Columbus.”
Upwards of 2,000 attendees—students, young adults, and higher education professionals—are expected to attend. “We want to make sure that attendees have a meaningful, realistic, and positive experience at the 2022 conference centering learning, laughter, and queer and trans joy!,” said TK Morton, the Institute’s director of equity and access and the staff lead on attendee experience for MBLGTACC.
The 30th annual gathering will deepen and expand on that attendee experience through its core programming and additional opportunities. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with students from multiple states and institutions to carry out this year’s conference,” added R.B. Brooks, the Institute’s director of programs. “There have already been some incredible new ideas proposed for how to make the next conference extra meaningful for student activists, politically engaged students, and LGBTQ+ artists.”
Conference registration and a call for workshop proposals are tentatively scheduled to launch in April 2022, with announcements of speakers and entertainers to follow.
This will be the second time MBLGTACC has visited Columbus and the Buckeye state. The land occupied by Columbus is the ancestral and contemporary territory of the Shawnee, Potawatomi, Delaware, Miami, Peoria, Seneca, Wyandotte, Ojibwe and Cherokee peoples.
